Mowgli a.k.a. Jungle Book

INTRODUCTION  This award has been developed to assist Cub Leaders in promoting outdoor programs and summertime activities. The seven parts of the award are designed to augment the WOLF or BEAR Arrowhead Electives and the Webelos Activity Pin requirements. The Jungle Book Award may be earned by Den Chiefs and Adult Leaders who participate in the outings. (Characters used with permission, Walt Disney Co., 1988)

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Meet all applicable General Requirements .
  2. The specific requirements shall supersede the General Requirements if there is an area of conflict.
  3. Each segment requires a separate outdoor activity and a different Arrowhead or Activity Pin requirement Den Leader will keep a record and very completion of all requirements.
  4. File a Tour Permit with your local Council for all outings.

THE MOWGLI AWARD (2 inch Center Patch)
This award MUST be earned prior to earning any of the individual segments.

  1. Study the stories of the Jungle Book Tales by Rudyard Kipling and by Disney. Answer the following questions:
    1. Who was Mowgli?
    2. Who was Akela
    3. Who spoke for Mowgli to join the Wolf Pack?
    4. Who taught Mowgli the “Law of the Jungle”?
    5. What did Kaa do to help Mowgli?
    6. What was the “Red Flower”? Why did Mowgli use it?

AKELA SEGMENT:
May be earned as WOLF, BEAR, or WEBELOS.

  1. Participate in a Den or Pack outing to a local zoo or nature center and observe one of the animals represented by a character from the “Jungle Book Stories”. Draw a picture of the animal OR describe the following:
    1. Animal’s features
    2. Native habitat
    3. Foods the animal eats
  2. Complete the two requirements toward a Cub Arrowhead Elective or Webelos Activity Pin on animal or family topics.

KAA Segment:
May be earned as a WOLF, BEAR, or WEBELOS

  1. Participate in a Den, Pack, or Council outdoor or summertime activity OR earn one of the following Cub Adventure Awards:
    1. Cub Ranger
    2. Firebird Trail
    3. Vasquez Rock-Geologic Hike
    4. Big Sycamore Canyon
  2. Complete two requirements toward Arrowhead Elective or Webelos Activity Pin related to outdoor topics.

BALOO SEGMENT:
May only be earned while a BEAR or WEBELOS.

  1. Participate in a Den, Pack or Council outdoor or summertime activity OR earn one of the following awards:
    1. Conservation Award
    2. Whale Watcher (WLAAC) or Whale Award (SDC)
    3. Grunion run
  2. Complete two requirements towards an Arrowpoint elective or Activity Pin on a Nature or Conservation topic.

KING LOUIE SEGMENT:

  1. Participate in a Den, Pack, or Council outdoor or summertime activity OR earn one of the following awards:
    1. Home Town Historic Sites
    2. Historic Cycling Tour
    3. El Camino Real
    4. Old Town Heritage
    5. Los Fierros
  2. Complete any two requirements towards an Arrowpoint Elective or Activity Pin on Games or Sports topics OR earn a Cub Sports Award

BAGHEERA SEGMENT:
May only be earned as a WEBELOS.

  1. Participate in a Webelos Den or Council outdoor or Summertime activity OR earn one of the following awards:
    1. Webelos 5 mile Hiker
    2. Mormon Battalion Trail
    3. Webelos Cycling 25 km
    4. Penguin Club
  2. Earn the Readyman Activity Pin, and
  3. Complete any ONE of the following Activity Pins:
    1. Athlete
    2. Fitness
    3. Sportsman
    4. Aquanaut

SHER KAHN SEGMENT:
May only be earned as a WEBELOS.

  1. Participate in a Den, Pack or Council outdoor or summertime activity OR earn one of the following awards:
    1. Webelos Scout Hiker (WLAAC)
    2. Webelos Under the Stars (CIEC)
    3. Webelos overnighter (SDC)
    4. Scout-Webelos Weekend (WLAAC)
    5. Webelos Trail Maintenance (WLAAC)
  2. Complete any two of the following Activity Pins:
    1. Forester
    2. Outdoorsman
    3. Naturalist
    4. Geologist
  3. Earn or have earned the Readyman Activity Pin.
